The Challenge

The Lewiston Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for providing policing and public safety services to the over 60,000 residents living and working in the greater Lewiston, ID-WA Metropolitan area. Lewiston is the second-largest city in the Northern Idaho region, and the ninth-largest in the state. As the primary law enforcement agency within this community, the Lewiston Police Department was looking for a better way to train and prepare their officers for real-life de-escalation and use of force incidents.

The Solution

After significant research on the various training simulator options, the Lewiston Police Department chose to include the Apex Officer virtual reality use of force, crisis intervention, and de-escalation training simulator as a major component of its training program. The Apex Officer virtual reality training simulator is capable of simulating an infinite number of different training scenarios that can convey body language and other non-verbal threat cues that are a crucial part of progressive judgmental use of force training. Apex Officer is providing Idaho law enforcement agencies with unprecedented training opportunities and virtual reality simulations.

The Results

The Apex Officer training system is a game changer for not only the Lewiston police officers, but for the Lewiston community members as a whole. The Apex Officer training simulator utilizes VR technology and includes peripheral vision and training tools that closely match those used in the field to enhance the transferability of the training to real-life scenarios. Additionally, Lewiston Police Department has incorporated their new VR training system into their citizen's academy. As reported in Police Tech New's most recent publication: Lewiston Police Department Showcases VR Simulator During Citizen's Police Academy.
